Your 'go to' genres?
Title is fairly self explanatory - when you're in a game shop and there's a wide range of games available, what genres do you find yourself gravitating to?
For me, it's the RPG (Japanese or Western, don't really care), Strategy (preferably Grand Strategy to Tactics or RTS), and Simulation (especially trading games). Yeah, I like painfully time-consuming games But they've got to be rewarding - I'm not a fan of simplified versions of any of those genres.

Gotta be RPG's and fighting games too. I know what you mean with time-consuming games, is hard to be an RPG fan. I'm a completionist so that makes things worst for me. I hardly have time for anything else so I just concentrate in what I feel comfortable with.

RPG, RPG/strategy, sports games with RPG elements. There could be a theme here... hmm....
Re: Your 'go to' genres?
It's weird, when a fighting game lands on my doorstep, I'll inevitably play it and love it (unless it's a Street Fighter or Tekken game...). But I don't go out of my way and buy these things. Even Dead or Alive 5, which I've spent something like 200 hours playing across Vita and PS3, I would never have bought if TK didn't send me a review copy.
... Actually, no, I lie. I bought a fighting game once. Persona 4 Arena was paid for with my own cash, and I regret that purchase none whatsoever. Whattagame.

Don't know much about that one. I have a 3DS though so I'll have to find out more about it.MattS wrote:Did ya nab SteamWorld Dig yet?cheetahman91 wrote:Platformers.

Except for JRPGs, right?SamM wrote:The genre that Capcom releases it's games as.
Because Dragon's Dogma was terrible.
Re: Your 'go to' genres?
I've heard nothing but good things about Dragon's Dogma, save for Joystiq's review. What didn't you like about it?MattS wrote:Except for JRPGs, right?SamM wrote:The genre that Capcom releases it's games as.

Re: Your 'go to' genres?
I've actually heard a lot of mixed things about Dragon's Dogma, there seemed to be a lot of complaints at the time.
Re: Your 'go to' genres?
Hmm. Granted my definition of mixed is a bit different, if a game scores lower than 70-75 on Metacritic, I don't think of it as bad, but I usually do a bit more research before picking it up. Dragon's Dogma did alright with critics for the most part.CanisWolfred wrote:I've actually heard a lot of mixed things about Dragon's Dogma, there seemed to be a lot of complaints at the time.
Re: Your 'go to' genres?
Matt and I definitely had different takes on Dragon's Dogma. I enjoyed it quite a bit - I thought the combat was a lot of fun and the Pawn system was cool too. The lack of fast travel just killed me early on (though I hear to a lesser degree that's now rectified in the latest version). The visuals sometimes impressed (loved the shadow on the ground when a griffon soared past - it reminded me of the dragons from Skyrim), but the shadows - especially at night - were really bad.
My biggest complaint about Dragon's Dogma was that it felt like it had a bit of an identity crisis. At times it seemed to want to tell a really good story, and at others the story was paper thin. Combat was a lot of fun, but it was easy to grind and become massively overpowered (I've heard from friends who used my pawns that my pawn pretty much took them through the whole game like easy mode). The world itself felt a bit 'bland' - very few stories or characters of substantial note.
All of that said, I sunk a bunch of time into the game, beat it, and would definitely play a sequel myself.

I meant "Mixed from sources I trust". I do not trust random reviewers on Metacritic.Shaan Joshi wrote:Hmm. Re: Your 'go to' genres?
And since I'm feeling playfully competitive with Matt today (I blame it on him winning 2 out of 3 on Saturday against me in Might & Magic Duel of Champions) - here's my review:MattS wrote:My review of Dragon's Dogma: http://www.otakugaming.com/2012/05/review-dragons-dogma-ps3.html

Now to a degree, these are both semi-dated reviews. I don't believe any of us at Digitally Downloaded reviewed the updated Dark Arisen title. Now I do have a co-worker who has - and he says they made a lot of very nice improvements over the original, and really likes Dark Arisen - but he was also more of a fan of the original Dragon's Dogma than either Matt or myself, having said he felt the game was an 8 or 9 out of 10 (he's the one who loaned me the Xbox 360 copy I used for my review).

Eh. It's wasn't the best but I did enjoy it.MattS wrote:Except for JRPGs, right?SamM wrote:The genre that Capcom releases it's games as.

One genre I can't handle at all though are racers. Kart racers fine, but when it becomes realistic I'm crashing into walls even when it's a straight line.

Re: Your 'go to' genres?
My go to genres? Platformers, shooters (first, third, and side scrolling i.e. Contra), Action adventure, Adventure, puzzle platformer, sandbox games (they've been growing on me for the last few years), survival horror (lol), and certain RPGs.
Puzzle games, educational games, sports games, and rhythm games annoy me but are definitely enjoyable once or twice a year.

Who needs DDR when you can have SEGA localising Hatsune Miku gamesturtleリンク wrote:Fighting games, action games (Metal Gear Rising, Viewtiful Joe, etc), and rhythm games.. Really hope DDR makes a comeback with the next generation...
Re: Your 'go to' genres?
Different types of music, and DDR is fun when you have the actual dance pad and are moving around. I still boot up my Xbox/Xbox 360 versions of DDR when I want to bust a move.MattS wrote:Who needs DDR when you can have SEGA localising Hatsune Miku gamesturtleリンク wrote:Fighting games, action games (Metal Gear Rising, Viewtiful Joe, etc), and rhythm games.. Yeah but... vocaloid. Nothing beats that, dude.
Incidently and completely off topic, if you like rhythm games, check out Groove Coaster on iOS. It's amazing - Taito at its very finest.
