How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Example. I've been playing Atelier Totori Plus in my Vita and there is a ending that I want to see. For the ending, I need an insane amount of money. There's a trick to get the money, but I have to do that trick hundreds of thousands of times, seriously. I've been doing it the whole week, I've spent hours doing the damn trick and I'm not even half way trough. I spent the whole night doing it and I only slept like 2 hours this morning. I know is not worth it, I can just watch the ending on Youtube, but I refuse to do it. I feel like I have to do it myself. There's no sense of achievement if I just watch it on Youtube. I could be playing something else but I'm stuck here in one game.
And I wonder. How far have you gone to get something in a game? Was it worth it or not? Please share your story about it.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
I got up out of my chair and went on GameFAQs. Truly a feat to behold.
EDIT:
Okay, technically, the furthest I've gone was wanting to get to a different city in Final Fantasy XI before the trial ran out. I thought it was as easy as following the map. So I did...until I encountered rediculously strong enemies I could never hope to defeat. Instead of turning back, I then stealthed my way past every monster, Solid Snake style, until I reached a City I wasn't supposed to get to until level 50, when I was level 14, where I was then congratulated by everyone who passed me by. I then went out the wrong gate, and accidently activated a warp crystal, forcing me to then stealth my way back to my starting city. I then told a friend about my feat...who then told me I could've just taken an airship to his city, I think around level 25...I was at the end of my trial, though, so I'd say it was worth it.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Wow, that's a good question. I think this happens in JRPG's probably more than most titles. It's hard to say though... The first game I got a Platinum Trophy on was Final Fantasy XIII-2, which was worth it to me - I enjoyed the game quite a bit, but there were some pretty menial tasks in there too.
In terms of an hours investment, probably getting the true ending in Record of Agarest War. I could have just watched it on Youtube or something, but I wanted to get it for myself. The thing was - I first beat it on normal difficulty, and that took me about 75 hours. That meant most of my New Game+ stuff would not carry over when I started again on Hard - which you need to do for the true ending. There are also several events that have to be handled 'just so' - so I was following a walkthrough on my second round of play. on top of that, the game was MUCH harder, so I did a lot more grinding and easily sunk another 100+ hrs into it. I loved that I finally got that ending, but in retrospect? Probably not worth THAT much effort, lol

@CanisWolfred
That's funny because I tried to do the same thing in the FFXIV beta, it took me a while and then I got tired and I left my character halfway through surrounded by high level monsters. Then watching a video I saw that you can hire a Chocobo to travel to another city. If I ever get the game, is going to be tricky to get back.
@Chalgyr
I wanted to Platinum FFXIII-2 but after I finished it, I never found the time to go back to it. My hardest Platinum has to be Dark Souls. I was supposed to get the platinum with 3 playtroughs but I made a mistake and had to do another one and that last one took me forever because I got stuck with one of the bosses. You can get people to help you with bosses but there was very few people playing on PS3 and I had to beat all of them by myself. But it was 100% worth it. I can say the same for Atelier Totori. I'm still working to get the true ending and is driving me crazy. This ending better be awesome because if it sucks I don't know what I'm going do with my life. They better strip and everything at the end after all this work, lol.

ROFL @ that final line there, Astor. Seriously - laughing my ass off.
Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
What a great topic idea.
This isn't "great lengths" in terms of gameplay, but in terms of sheer monetary spend - I wanted all the costumes in Dead or Alive 5. Which I have subsequently done.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Wow. I haven't posted in a while. I ought to change that.
Anyway, I think I spent a good part of an afternoon one Saturday trying to get an achievement in Kid Icarus Uprising. I was terrible at the game back then though. Since then though, whenever I've wanted to get an achievement I've stuck with it until I've gotten it, most of the time. And it's taken me from minutes to hours to weeks to even months to get some of those achievements.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
This all raises an interesting sub-discussion: how often has 'get an achievement' been a reason that you've kept on playing a game?
For me, it hasn't yet - I've never gone after a platinum, for instance.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Well, it depends on the game, I guess. After beating Plants Vs. Zombies on iOS, I went through and tried getting some of those achievements. Added a few hours of play time to that game for me. For KIU, it's added numerous hours of Solo time. I'm sure when Shovel Knight comes out(I have it backed so I'm getting it Day 1 ) I'll be going after those achievements.
If you want to go into unlocking stuff(not actually achievements) there are quite a few games I'll play until completion(or try to) to unlock more stuff.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
It has for me, several times Matt. Very seldom do I go into game thinking: Yup, this is a Platinum or 100% achievement title for me. But I may beat a game and be like: wow, I only missed those like 3 or 4. I can do that - and go back and get them. This is almost precisely what happened with Time & Eternity for me on my way to its platinum.
Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Can't think of anything as mentally draining as Astor, but I have gone out of my way to complete the Pokedex multiple times in multiple different games and ensure I hoard one of each (meaning all forms of Pidgey, not just Pidgeotto for example).
As for chasing achievements/trophies, it's not something I regularly do. The exceptions are usually games where you're going to end up getting most of the stuff just by 100% completing the game normally. Sonic Generations is a prime example and had only one trophy that I had to genuinely go out of my way for (but boy was it a pain).

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Matt, I can only think of two games that I kept playing just for trophy's, Uncharted 2 and Playstation All-Stars. I liked Uncharted but not as much as to do more than one playthrough and I had to do 4 for the Platinum. All-Stars was the same, but the trophy list looked so easy but I had to finish the super boring story mode with all characters. It was a Painful Platinum.
I also had the opposite experience. I didn't want to play a game after I got all the trophy's. I always liked getting a Platinum, but they take my interest away from the game after I got all trophy's. It happened with Mass Effect 2 and 3 and Darksouls. Once I got the Platinum I felt like I was wasting my time, even though I really wanted to keep playing them.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Haha, Pokemon. Back when I had fewer games to play and more time, I went out of my way to get a load of pokemon and level them up to 100 in Blue (not as easy then as it is now). I ended up with 30 or so level 100 pokemon. Including a Magikarp, for some reason.
I just thought of one thing I've gone out of my way to do - I almost always play as the weakest side in a strategy game once I've mastered the mechanics. There's something about defying the odds that I find appealing.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
I could never get into Pokémon. I've spend 4-5 hours on black and... that's it. But, that's getting off topic.
Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
I officially have a new biggest gaming achievement, and that would be 9.0ing every Chapter in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Only took me 380 hours over a period of about 1 year and 7 months.
It was worth it.

Wow - that is awesome. I loved that game, but some of those levels were TOUGH. Congrats!KiDasharus wrote:I officially have a new biggest gaming achievement, and that would be 9.0ing every Chapter in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Only took me 380 hours over a period of about 1 year and 7 months.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Thanks. My next goal is to get every Achievement; I suspect that'll take me another year (actually I only have 6 left at the time of posting, but one of them is defeating Boss Battle Mode on Hard, which is nearly impossible. Like, I can't even get halfway through without dying. Yeah.)Chalgyr wrote:Wow - that is awesome. I loved that game, but some of those levels were TOUGH. So what you're saying is, you're hoping there's going to be a KI:U sequel at some point?KiDasharus wrote:Thanks. Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Haha @ Matt. I'd love to see one of those myself!

Indeed. YOU MUST MAKE IT HAPPEN NINTENDO.MattS wrote:So what you're saying is, you're hoping there's going to be a KI:U sequel at some point?KiDasharus wrote:Thanks. And if Nintendo doesn't do it then, well, I'll get a job at Nintendo and do it myself >:0

Which means I'm sure there will be a sequel at some point! Perhaps after the team's wrapped up the next Smash Bros they'll get cracking on a Wii U title or something.
Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
For the sake of not quoting over 5 messages, I'll just respond here.
Sakurai has already said he's not going to make another Kid Icarus, or at least, not one soon. He also said if there's another one made it won't be for a while (like, 25 years). Plus, KIU didn't really sell phenomenally, I think overall sales are something like 1,200,000 last time I checked VGChartz.
Still, it's possible a new Kid Icarus will come out before 25 years are up, I absolutely despise bringing this up because it doesn't really mean anything but Sakurai did say there wasn't going to be Super Smash Melee (or was it Brawl? I forget) and yet, both exist today. So what Sakurai says and what Sakurai does are 2 completely different things. However, until then, I'll have dreams of a new Kid Icarus~

Quote more! Quote more!
I had actually read the same thing KiDasharus - and was pretty disappointed. The game didn't sell phenomenally well, but it did pretty well. But yeah, it sounded like it could be years until they make another KI game, unfortunately.

Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
From memory, KI was successful enough given that the 3DS hasn't quite taken off at the time. I'm sure that Nintendo has enough talent around that even if Sakurai doesn't want to take it on, someone else will :-)
Re: How far have you gone to get something in a game?
Fair enough; it's possible. But, if there was someone I'd want doing it, it'd be Sakurai. His talent for making games as good as they can possibly be (for the most part) is amazing. Anyway, I'd still buy whatever Kid Icarus game they came out with, I just hope they make another, at some point or another.
