Did you wind up getting anything? I was pretty well-behaved. I got my copy of RPG Maker VX Ace authorized on Steam and picked up a couple of heavily discounted resource packs, and I picked up Heroes of Might & Magic VI. I have been thoroughly enjoying that one so far (very similar to the King's Bounty titles for PC, which I like as well).

I didn't purchase a whole lot either in an attempt to play it safer this year. Okay, so maybe I still did, but they were at least large bundles with multiple games rather than individuals. The Sonic one in particular had 14~ games and several DLC packs for $15 so I felt obligated. A few stray games were too good to pass up (mainly the multiplayer games such as L4D2 but also some indie games like Bastion and Cthulhu). I'd say the selection was pretty solid this year.

How is Ace, by the way? I've wanted to try the RPG Makers for years now but there are so many games coming out constantly and on the back burner that I feel like making my own is futile. Razz

I personally love RPG Maker Ace for just about everything but the visuals. They aren't bad, but everything is a bit more squarish than RPG Maker XP was. I've been using the RPG Makers for about 12 years now in one form or another, so if you have a question about them, I'm sure I can answer it. They and their resource bundles were 66% off one of the days during the Steam sales. Since what I really suck at personally is the graphics, those resource bundles appeal to me - though setting them up can take some time.

So, fun footnote - if you look at RPG Maker VX Ace on Steam, glance down at the 'reviews' section. Matt's review of the software gets quoted in slot #2

Haha, that's pretty awesome.

I'm a big fan of Ace. I found it much easier to work with than XP, and for a programming dunce with little time or patience for learning coding, that was useful.

Also, some of the community stuff/ DLC around Ace is awesome. I saw a retro, Game Boy visual tile set around somewhere which looked awesome.

As soon as I get a new Windows computer I am getting Ace right back on it.

I no longer have a credit card, and Paypal ironically does not work without one, despite my entire bank account being in there (what exactly is the purpose of paypal, then?), so I couldn't get anything.

Matt: My problem is, the PC doesn't get a TON of use by me. My son, sure. But I prefer playing console games most of the time. When I am on my PC, it's every few days or maybe a time or two a week. If you figure I check out RPG Maker VX Ace every 2nd or 3rd time... well, it becomes hard to pick up where I left off. A video game, I can usually play aain after a short break, but I think RPG Maker requires a few more of my braincells, so that is why I have so many started, but incomplete projects.

Canis: My prevailing thought? That sucks. That sucks a lot actually. :/

@Canis
Man, that smarts. My brother had a similar situation and was equally "thrilled". Still, I've heard you can use those pre-paid MasterCard or Visa cards as a temporary means of purchasing things. You can find them at an average Shopper's Drug Mart or an equivalent. It's still not an ideal method for various reasons (not to mention the sales are over now...), but it would allow you to grab a deal the next time you see one.

There are supposedly Steam cards in circulation but if you're like me, there probably aren't any near your location. This seems like the only alternative beyond having a friend gift you the games.

Yeah, I just got my hands on my first Steam cards. Trying to figure out what that's all about and how it works. I see a few people have been selling theirs for actual money. I'm just trying to get the system figured out myself and been contemplating a post on the matter once I'm more familiar with it. Unfortunately my PC sees less gaming these days than my PS3, Vita or 360.

For what it's worth, I know what that's like. So when my wife got me my new PC a couple of years ago, I really had not done any PC gaming in... years. I knew nothing about Steam. And had it during their Christmas sales. My. God. I spent so much money on games that winter. I still haven't played them all, lol. I think the worst was when I purchased the Sega collection. It was like... every Sega game Steam had for like $70 or something like that.

Steam puts on the best sales though seems like the biggest ones are in the summer and at Christmas i always over spend but theres so many good indie games on there its hard not to. i also love the green light thing they do

Okay, so I guess Paypal recinded that or something because just now I was able to buy something from steam without it requiring a credit card. I seriously did nothing different. And since the sale was over, I spent full price for two games. Luckily they were the last two Steam games I really wanted...

Well, at least it's sorted out now, but odd just the same. Steam will now gladly take your money. Smile
