DS/ 3DS Wizardry Clones!
There's quite a few of them now! From The Dark Spire, to Etrian Odyssey and SMTIV (not technically a Wizardry clone, but it comes close enough for this topic), and retro Virtual Consoles games like Sword of Hope II.
I'm a big fan of the genre, ever since the original Wizardry, and in the west, the DS and 3DS has been largely responsible for keeping the genre alive. So which is your favourites and why?
For me it's The Dark Spire, mostly because by turning retro visuals on it IS Wizardry, and I love that. I always enjoy the Etrian Odyssey games, but after the first I've never been so hooked that I would call them classics.
And in about 12 months we might have an announcement in Australia that SMTIV will be released 12 months later. So I'm not getting too excited about that one just yet.

SMTIV is nothing like Wizardry outside of being relatively challenging. You did remind me to go buy Wizardry 6 and 7, though. I'll be back.

Doesn't it use a first-person perspective? First person perspective + Dungeon focus over plot + challenge is pretty much the definition of Wizardry clone.CanisWolfred wrote:SMTIV is nothing like Wizardry outside of being relatively challenging. Perhaps I just haven't been following that game closely enough.

No, it's completely 3rd person, and it isn't dungeon focused - there are plenty of towns and stuff. It plays more like Nocturne, actually, which, if you recall, had you going all over the place, talking to people and whatnot...you must have it mistaken for Strange Journey, which is dungeon-focused to an extent.
Re: DS/ 3DS Wizardry Clones!
Ah, my bad then.
It's off topic now, but if it's like SMT Nocturne I'm far more interested in it.

Never seen Dark Spire. Etrian is one I plan to get soon - especially w/ the recent sale and my credits just chilling on my eShop account.
SMT4 is... well, the wandering aspect actually reminds me more of Persona 4 for comparison's sake. you even 'swing' to initiate/get the upper hand at the beginning of combat. The combat is turn based, but even that has a few unique spins on it, like the 'smirk' system (hitting weaknesses and such might grant you an extra turn for a character before the enemy's phase).
I would like to hear more titles like this too. There are a ton of really good ones like this for the PSP - not much that I'm aware of for the Vita yet though. (Monkey Paw's Class of Heroes 2, and Elminage Original for PSP are pretty solid examples of the genre imo).

None of those PSP games got a release in Australia :-( I wish we got more Wizardry love.
If you get a chance, check out The Dark Spire, it's a special game, that one, with an especially incredible soundtrack.

I will have to do so. I looked it up online a bit ago - and tried to figure out how that one flew under my radar. Now I see how - it's a few years old - standard DS title. I missed out on a lot of great DS games, because I never had a DS - 3DS was my first in the console line.
As an aside, I know a few months ago, I heard rumors of another Elminage game coming out for the 3DS. I haven't heard anything on it since, but it will still happen?
