Retro Game Recommendations
Thought I'd make a thread so people could ask about old games.
I also wanted to make a thread specifically for "what retro games should I play" but I figured this'd be ,ore useful for others and I still get to ask that question.
Anyways, I'm tempted to play some NES games, and compiled a list of ones that might be good that I have access to:
NES:
Contra
Metal Storm
Clash at Demonhead
Journey to Silius
Little Nemo
Darkwing Duck
Chip 'n' Dale
Ducktales
The Guardian Legend
What two games from this list should I play?

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I know that Contra is hugely well-regarded, but other than that I have no idea, sorry. NES-era is not my area of speciality.
I mostly just wanted to leave a comment to say great thread idea

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I would lay off Clash at Demonhead unless you have a guide at your fingertips or lots of time to fool around. From what I experienced a while back, it's not terribly intuitive even by NES standards.
Ducktales is a good choice if you have no interest in grabbing the remake that comes soon and Contra is a guaranteed good time if you're up to the challenge (or abusing the Konami code). Little Nemo is solid if I recall but I wouldn't put it above either of those two.

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
Probably Ducktales and contra. Guardian Legend was cool - because it was so different at the time. It could get a bit repetitive though after a time.
Re: Retro Game Recommendations
Just got a couple of games (Cotton, Match of the Millenium, Rockman Power Battles+Fighters) for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and it is a blast to play with the clicky control stick. Seriously, it is my fave retro handheld in terms of build and battery life. Anyone looking for a neat little handheld with a great fighting game line up should definitely track this system down.

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I know it's not RETRO retro, since it's a SNES game and readily available on the Wii U Virtual Console, but get Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV. It's a game that hearkens back to a time where serious strategy games could exist on consoles, and not be relegated to the far corners of the PC gaming public.
It's a rich, deep game.

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
Ducktales is HARD. Granted, maybe that's just because I have no idea what I'm doing and the controls are a bit funny (why do I have to press up and B to do that pogo thing? Why can't I just press B?), but this game is flooring me on easy. It's still fun, it's just...For some reason I expected at least the first level to be not that bad. I guess I forgot this was a Capcom NES game...
Re: Retro Game Recommendations
Are you playing Duck Tales: Remastered or the original? I dont know but everyone I talk to the original is one of the easiest games on the NES. I replayed it yesterday before I replayed the Remastered and I can still beat that game in 30 minutes with the best ending. And I dont know whats wrong with your controller but you press down and B for the pogo attack.CanisWolfred wrote:Ducktales is HARD. Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I never played Duck Tales, despite being a mega fan of Scrooge. Probably because I didn't have a NES...
Looking forward to getting into the remaster. Game looks SLICK.

Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I played enough Ducktales and Contra to get it out of my system for now. Now I want to play some retro RPGs. Should I play:
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Grandia
Suikoden
Wild Arms
Xenogears
Lufia 2
I've only played Grandia before, and have not gotten that far yet.

I really like Wild Arms, though I thought that the puzzles were a little too obscure for their own good.CanisWolfred wrote:I played enough Ducktales and Contra to get it out of my system for now. Now I want to play some retro RPGs. Should I play:

Lunar's a classic, but make sure you don't pick up the iOS version of that - one of the worst ports I've ever experienced.
Since you like Xenoblade you're almost certainly going to like Xenogears.
Re: Retro Game Recommendations
I should note that I own all of these games, either on Disc/cart. or on PSN. I just haven't gotten around to most of them yet. I suppose I should also note Xenogears plays nothing like Xenoblade, but I suspect you already know that.MattS wrote:I really like Wild Arms, though I thought that the puzzles were a little too obscure for their own good.CanisWolfred wrote:I played enough Ducktales and Contra to get it out of my system for now. Re: Retro Game Recommendations
Lunar is amazing. I really, really enjoyed that game. I originally played it on the Genesis, but most recently experienced it on the PSP. So good.
Suikoden was pretty fun - I played that on PS1 a million years ago.
Wild Arms... I don't know. It's decent, but it just never 'clicked' with me for some reason.
I haven't played Grandia, Xenogears or Lufia.
